Comparative statistics and origin of triple and quadruple stars The statistics of catalogued quadruple stars consisting of two binaries(hierarchy 2 + 2), is studied in comparison with triple stars, withrespective sample sizes of 81 and 724. Seven representative quadruplesystems are discussed in greater detail. The main conclusions are asfollows. (i) Quadruple systems of ? Lyr type with similar massesand inner periods are common, in 42 per cent of the sample the outermass ratio is above 0.5 and the inner periods differ by less than 10times. (ii) The distributions of the inner periods in triple andquadruple stars are similar and bimodal. The inner mass ratios do notcorrelate with the inner periods. (iii) The statistics of outer periodsand mass ratios in triples and quadruples are different. The medianouter mass ratio in triples is 0.39 independently of the outer period,which has a smooth distribution. In contrast, the outer periods of 25per cent quadruples concentrate in the narrow range from 10 to 100yr,the outer mass ratios of these tight quadruples are above 0.6 and theirtwo inner periods are similar to each other. (iv) The outer and innermass ratios in triple and quadruple stars are not mutually correlated.In 13 per cent of quadruples both inner mass ratios are above 0.85(double twins). (v) The inner and outer orbital angular momenta andperiods in triple and quadruple systems with inner periods above 30dshow some correlation, the ratio of outer-to-inner periods is mostlycomprised between 5 and 104. In the systems with small periodratios the directions of the orbital spins are correlated, while in thesystems with large ratios they are not. The properties of multiple starsdo not correspond to the products of dynamical decay of small clusters,hence the N-body dynamics is not the dominant process of theirformation. On the other hand, rotationally driven (cascade)fragmentation possibly followed by migration of inner and/or outerorbits to shorter periods is a promising scenario to explain the originof triple and quadruple stars.
| Contribution to the search for binaries among Am stars - VIII. New spectroscopic orbits of eight systems and statistical study of a sample of 91 Am stars This paper is the last of a series devoted to the study of Am stars,with the monitoring of radial velocities of a sample of 91 objectsduring more than 20 yr. The purpose was to determine which stars weremembers of spectroscopic binaries (SBs) and study in detail thosesystems in order to obtain observational constraints on the origin ofthe Am phenomenon.In the first part, we present the results of a detailed study of eightAm stars (HD 32893, 60489, 109762, 111057, 113697, 204918, 219675 andBD+44° 4512) observed at the Haute-Provence and Cambridgeobservatories with CORAVEL instruments. We find that these objects aresingle-lined SBs whose orbital elements are determined for the firsttime. HD 32893 is found to be a triple spectroscopic system whose thirdbody might be detected by speckle interferometry. Physical parametersare inferred for the primaries of those SBs. We then investigate theinfluence of tidal interaction and find that it has already led to thesynchronism of the primaries and to the circularization of the orbits offour of those systems.In the second part of this paper, we present the main results of ourwhole programme and derive some statistical properties of Am stars. Wegive the recapitulating table of the orbital parameters found for theSBs of our whole sample and the list of those for which no evidence forradial velocity variations could be found during our monitoring. Ourstudy shows that at least 64 per cent of Am stars are members of SBs.This rate is significantly greater than that of normal stars. Althoughsome SBs may have been not detected, this study shows that a substantialfraction of Am stars do not belong to SBs: they are either isolatedstars or members of wide binary systems.We then present some statistical properties of the orbital parameters ofthe SBs whose primary is an Am star, on an extended sample obtained byadding 29 Am SB orbits published by other authors. The corresponding eversus logP diagram shows a cut-off between the circular and theeccentric systems at P ~ 5.6 +/- 0.5 d, which indicates a typical age of0.5 - 1 × 109 yr for the Am stars, which is inagreement with the values found in our previous detailed studies. AMonte Carlo analysis shows that the distribution of the mass functionvalues f(m) is compatible with a power-law distribution N(m) ~m-α of the masses m of the companions with α =0.3 +/- 0.2 or with a Gaussian distribution centred on 0.8 +/-0.5Msolar, which indicates that the companions of Am SBs aremostly dwarf stars of type G-K-M.
| Astrometric orbits of SB^9 stars Hipparcos Intermediate Astrometric Data (IAD) have been used to deriveastrometric orbital elements for spectroscopic binaries from the newlyreleased Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits(SB^9). This endeavour is justified by the fact that (i) theastrometric orbital motion is often difficult to detect without theprior knowledge of the spectroscopic orbital elements, and (ii) suchknowledge was not available at the time of the construction of theHipparcos Catalogue for the spectroscopic binaries which were recentlyadded to the SB^9 catalogue. Among the 1374 binaries fromSB^9 which have an HIP entry (excluding binaries with visualcompanions, or DMSA/C in the Double and Multiple Stars Annex), 282 havedetectable orbital astrometric motion (at the 5% significance level).Among those, only 70 have astrometric orbital elements that are reliablydetermined (according to specific statistical tests), and for the firsttime for 20 systems. This represents a 8.5% increase of the number ofastrometric systems with known orbital elements (The Double and MultipleSystems Annex contains 235 of those DMSA/O systems). The detection ofthe astrometric orbital motion when the Hipparcos IAD are supplementedby the spectroscopic orbital elements is close to 100% for binaries withonly one visible component, provided that the period is in the 50-1000 drange and the parallax is >5 mas. This result is an interestingtestbed to guide the choice of algorithms and statistical tests to beused in the search for astrometric binaries during the forthcoming ESAGaia mission. Finally, orbital inclinations provided by the presentanalysis have been used to derive several astrophysical quantities. Forinstance, 29 among the 70 systems with reliable astrometric orbitalelements involve main sequence stars for which the companion mass couldbe derived. Some interesting conclusions may be drawn from this new setof stellar masses, like the enigmatic nature of the companion to theHyades F dwarf HIP 20935. This system has a mass ratio of 0.98 but thecompanion remains elusive.
| SB9: The ninth catalogue of spectroscopic binary orbits The Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits(http://sb9.astro.ulb.ac.be) continues the series of compilations ofspectroscopic orbits carried out over the past 35 years by Batten andcollaborators. As of 2004 May 1st, the new Catalogue holds orbits for2386 systems. Some essential differences between this catalogue and itspredecessors are outlined and three straightforward applications arepresented: (1) completeness assessment: period distribution of SB1s andSB2s; (2) shortest periods across the H-R diagram; (3)period-eccentricity relation.
| The Geneva-Copenhagen survey of the Solar neighbourhood. Ages, metallicities, and kinematic properties of 14 000 F and G dwarfs We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age,kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, andkinematically unbiased sample of 16 682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our63 000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13 500stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sampleand, together with published uvbyβ photometry, Hipparcosparallaxes, Tycho-2 proper motions, and a few earlier radial velocities,complete the kinematic information for 14 139 stars. These high-qualityvelocity data are supplemented by effective temperatures andmetallicities newly derived from recent and/or revised calibrations. Theremaining stars either lack Hipparcos data or have fast rotation. Amajor effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone agesfor all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has beengiven to a realistic treatment of statistical biases and errorestimates, as standard techniques tend to underestimate these effectsand introduce spurious features in the age distributions. Our ages agreewell with those by Edvardsson et al. (\cite{edv93}), despite severalastrophysical and computational improvements since then. We demonstrate,however, how strong observational and theoretical biases cause thedistribution of the observed ages to be very different from that of thetrue age distribution of the sample. Among the many basic relations ofthe Galactic disk that can be reinvestigated from the data presentedhere, we revisit the metallicity distribution of the G dwarfs and theage-metallicity, age-velocity, and metallicity-velocity relations of theSolar neighbourhood. Our first results confirm the lack of metal-poor Gdwarfs relative to closed-box model predictions (the ``G dwarfproblem''), the existence of radial metallicity gradients in the disk,the small change in mean metallicity of the thin disk since itsformation and the substantial scatter in metallicity at all ages, andthe continuing kinematic heating of the thin disk with an efficiencyconsistent with that expected for a combination of spiral arms and giantmolecular clouds. Distinct features in the distribution of the Vcomponent of the space motion are extended in age and metallicity,corresponding to the effects of stochastic spiral waves rather thanclassical moving groups, and may complicate the identification ofthick-disk stars from kinematic criteria. | Contribution to the search for binaries among Am stars - III. HD 7119: a double-lined spectroscopic binary and a triple system Radial velocity observations of HD 7119 with the CORAVEL instrument atObservatoire de Haute-Provence are reported. Known as anAmδδ Del metallic-line star, HD 7119 was included in ourspectroscopic survey of Am-type stars, the purpose of which was todetermine the frequency of binaries in this stellar family. This objectis found to be a double-lined spectroscopic binary with a variable valueof V0, the systematic velocity of the centre of gravity ofthe pair. The variation of this parameter is interpreted in terms of theorbital motion of an unseen third body with a much longer period. Theorbital elements were derived for both the short- and the long-periodorbits. These orbits can be considered to be well determined since theseobservations were performed on a regular basis over the 1992-1998period, covering more than 320 orbital cycles for the short-period (P=6.76 d) and 1.3 cycle for the long-period orbit (P~ 1700 d). As deducedfrom the ratio of the correlation dip areas, the magnitude difference ofthe components of the short-period system is 0.7 mag. Combined with theHipparcos data, this value leads to visual absolute magnitudes of 0.5and 1.2 for the primary and secondary components, respectively. Suchmagnitudes are consistent with evolved δ Del-type stars. The thirdbody could be a cool dwarf star with a minimum mass of 0.5Msolar, located at ~ 0.016 arcsec of the main system.Consequently, it cannot be the visual companion detected by Couteau witha separation of 3.35 arcsec. If this latter visual component were aphysical component (rather than an optical one), HD 7119 would be aquadruple system.

| MSC - a catalogue of physical multiple stars The MSC catalogue contains data on 612 physical multiple stars ofmultiplicity 3 to 7 which are hierarchical with few exceptions. Orbitalperiods, angular separations and mass ratios are estimated for eachsub-system. Orbital elements are given when available. The catalogue canbe accessed through CDS (Strasbourg). Half of the systems are within 100pc from the Sun. The comparison of the periods of close and widesub-systems reveals that there is no preferred period ratio and allpossible combinations of periods are found. The distribution of thelogarithms of short periods is bimodal, probably due to observationalselection. In 82\% of triple stars the close sub-system is related tothe primary of a wide pair. However, the analysis of mass ratiodistribution gives some support to the idea that component masses areindependently selected from the Salpeter mass function. Orbits of wideand close sub-systems are not always coplanar, although thecorresponding orbital angular momentum vectors do show a weak tendencyof alignment. Some observational programs based on the MSC aresuggested. | Spectral classifications in the near infrared of stars with composite spectra. II. Study of a sample of 180 stars A sample of 180 supposedly composite-spectrum stars has been studied onthe basis of spectra obtained in the near infrared (8370-8780 Angstroms)at a dispersion of 33 Anstroms/mm. The objective was to study the coolercomponents of the systems. Of our sample, 120 are true compositespectra, 35 are hot spectra of types B, F and 25 are Am stars. We find astrong concentration of the cooler components of the composite spectraaround G8III. In view of the difficulty of classifying compositespectra, because of the super position of an early type dwarf and a latetype giant or supergiant spectrum, we have made several tests to controlthe classification based upon the infrared region. Since all tests gavepositive results, we conclude that our classifications can be consideredas being both reliable and homogeneous. | Contribution to the study of composite spectra. V - HD 83270 - 1, AM star, triple spectroscopic system Results of observations of HD 83270 - 1, listed as a star with compositespectra by Hynek (1938), are presented, and the radial velocityvariations are interpreted in terms of a spectroscopic triple system.The orbital elements for the short- and long-period systems arepresented. The components of the close system are found to have aseparation near 20 solar radii and the third body gravitates around thissystem at a distance of about 500 solar radii. The primary star of thetriple system is an Am star; the classification A2, F3, F7 from the Kline, the hydrogen lines, and the metallic lines, respectively, isproposed. The present estimates of the mass of the third body yield aminimum value of one solar mass.
| Miscellaneous spectroscopic notes Results of slit-spectrograph observations are reported for approximately260 stars. The data presented range from recognition of many new Ap, Am,and other unusual stars to H-alpha observations of early-typesupergiants and Be stars. The material discussed was obtained over thepast 40 years at a number of U.S. observatories and at the DominionAstrophysical Observatory in Victoria, B.C.
| Spectroscopic tests of photoelectric stellar classification of abnormal stars Spectroscopic classification is obtained for 169 northern A5-G0 starspredicted by Olsen (1979, 1980) to have abnormal spectra on the basis ofStromgren four-color photometry. The success in identifying reddenedearly type stars was nearly 100 percent, for Am and early type weaklined stars about 75 percent, for stars above main sequence about 50percent, for composite spectra about 25 percent, and for Ap and LambdaBoo stars 0 percent. Thus photoelectric photometry is a successful firststep in discovering stars of the more extreme spectroscopicabnormalities.
| Estimation of spectral classifications for bright northern stars with interesting Stromgren indices The purpose of this investigation is to provide spectroscopic observerswith finding lists of potentially interesting objects. From anunpublished UVBY catalogue of 7026 northern stars (mostly brighter than8.3m) 1094 objects with interesting combinations of UVBY indices havebeen selected. Most stars with post-HD classifications have beenexcluded, as well as late F dwarfs belonging to the intermediatepopulation II. For the 792 remaining stars estimated spectralclassifications are given. The techniques and experience from a previouspaper dealing with southern stars have been utilized here. Among thepredicted spectral classifications are 40 OB stars; 262 Ap, Am, or Fmstars; 16 supergiants of types A to G; 110 bright giants of types A to K(class II); 156 double stars or objects with composite spectra; 26 lateF dwarfs; 91 weak-lined dwarf and giant stars of types F to K, includingearly F-type population II field blue stragglers; and a few possiblefield horizontal branch stars, lambda Bootis-type stars, and late-typehalo giants.
