An upper limit on the proper motion of optical filaments near the Cetus Arc (Loop 2)
A cross-correlation method was used to investigate the proper motion ofoptical filaments outside the radio loop known as the Cetus Arc (Loop2). No motion was detected to a 3 sigma upper limit of 0.15 arcsec/yr.If the filaments are the result of a supernova explosion at the centerof the Cetus Arc, then the age is greater than 1.3 million yr, theoptical radius is R=43-160 pc, the expansion velocity is less than 37km/s, and the explosion energy is (0.1-35) x 10 to the 44th J. Analternative model, that the filaments are debris from a supernovaexplosion in Orion, predicts a proper motion of 0.01 arcsec/yr, and sois not ruled out by this measurement.
