Evolution of interacting binaries with a B type primary at birth
We revisited the analytical expression for the mass ratio distributionfor non-evolved binaries with a B type primary. Selection effectsgoverning the observations were taken into account in order to comparetheory with observations. Theory was optimized so as to fit best withthe observed q-distribution of SB1s and SB2s. The accuracy of thistheoretical mass ratio distribution function is severely hindered by theuncertainties on the observations. We present a library of evolutionarycomputations for binaries with a B type primary at birth. Some liberalcomputations including loss of mass and angular momentum during binaryevolution are added to an extensive grid of conservative calculations. Our computations are compared statistically to the observeddistributions of orbital periods and mass ratios of Algols. ConservativeRoche Lobe Over Flow (RLOF) reproduces the observed distribution oforbital periods but fails to explain the observed mass ratios in therange q in [0.4-1]. In order to obtain a better fit the binaries have tolose a significant amount of matter, without losing much angularmomentum.

A catalogue of eclipsing variables
A new catalogue of 6330 eclipsing variable stars is presented. Thecatalogue was developed from the General Catalogue of Variable Stars(GCVS) and its textual remarks by including recently publishedinformation about classification of 843 systems and making correspondingcorrections of GCVS data. The catalogue1 represents thelargest list of eclipsing binaries classified from observations.

New Elements for 80 Eclipsing Binaries III.

The 74th Special Name-list of Variable Stars
We present the Name-list introducing GCVS names for 3153 variable starsdiscovered by the Hipparcos mission.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

The type of variability of Herbig Ae/Be stars
The paper presents a list of 23 Herbig Ae/Be stars and Herbig Ae/Be starcandidates, compiled on the basis of 2 to 8 years of observations in theStromgren photometric system. Results of the study show that spectraltype A0 separates the stars showing large variations in their brightnessfrom stars showing small variations, with the later spectral type starsbeing the more variable. The behavior of the stars in thecolor-magnitude diagram could be divided into three classes: (1) classR, in which there is a monotonic dependence of the color index on visualbrightness, (2) class CR, in which this dependence is not monotonic, and(3) class RB, in which there is no dependence. It was also found thatthe behavior of a star in the color-magnitude diagram is dependent noton the spectral type but on the size of the variation in brightness.

Long-term photometry of variables at ESO. I - The first data catalogue (1982-1986)
This paper presents the catalog of photometric data in the Stromgrensystem obtained during the first four years (October 1982 - September1986) of the Long-Term Photometry of Variables (LTPV) program at ESO.The data are available in computer-readable form.

Empirical temperature calibrations for early-type stars
Three temperature calibrations of suitable photometric quantities havebeen derived for O and B stars. A sample of 120 stars with reliableT(eff.) determinations has been used for establishing each calibration. The different calibrations have been critically discussed and compared.Temperature determinations for 1009 program stars have been obtainedwith an accuracy of the order of 10 percent.

Catalog of O-B stars observed with Tokyo Meridian Circle
A catalog of the O-B stars, selected from 'Blaauw-Parenago' list andRubin's catalog, has been compiled on the FK4 system by the observationsmade with Gautier 8-inch Meridian Circle at the Tokyo AstronomicalObservatory during the period, 1971 to 1979. It contains 1059 stars andwas compiled for the future establishment of high precision propermotions of O-B stars.

A catalog of ultraviolet interstellar extinction excesses for 1415 stars
Ultraviolet interstellar extinction excesses are presented for 1415stars with spectral types B7 and earlier. The excesses with respect to Vare derived from Astronomical Netherlands Satellite (ANS) 5-channel UVphotometry at central wavelengths of approximately 1550, 1800, 2500, and3300 A. A measure of the excess extinction in the 2200-A extinction bumpis also given. The data are valuable for investigating the systematicsof peculiar interstellar extinction and for studying the character of UVinterstellar extinction in the general direction of stars for which theextinction-curve shape is unknown.

Spectral classification from the ultraviolet line features of S2/68 spectra. V - Supplement series
The paper presents the ultraviolet classification of more than 450 B-Aand F spectra obtained with the sky survey telescope mounted on the TD1satellite. Concerning abnormal objects, attention is given to the Bestars, the binary stars, the helium weak stars, and the lambda Booobjects. With regard to Be stars, it is concluded that the 1930 Awavelength feature is linked to the existence of either shell structuresor Fe II emission lines in the visual spectral range. In addition, it issuggested that stellar spectra at wavelengths of 1410, 1610-20 and 2400A are equivalent to the He-weak group in the classical range.

Detection of low eccentricity orbits - an analysis of nine massive spectroscopic binaries
The elements of nine single-lined, short-period, massive spectroscopicbinaries are analyzed for significant orbital eccentricity. The Fouriertransform formalism for computation of orbits is used to derive anestimator of significance for the observed eccentricity. Of the ninesystems investigated, five are either probably or possibly in eccentricorbits.

The nature of the secondaries in some single-line spectroscopic binaries from X-ray observations
The paper presents the results of a search for X-ray emission in theenergy regions 0.16-0.284 keV and 1-3.5 keV from a number of single linespectroscopic binaries. In the soft X-ray channel two of the programobjects, HR 976 and Pi(5) Ori, gave fluxes corresponding to about 10 tothe 30 and 10 to the 32 erg per s, respectively. For the other objectsupper limits corresponding to 10 to the 31 - 10 to the 33 erg per s,depending on the object, are reported. On the basis of a stellar windaccretion model, these upper limits are converted into upper limits ofmass loss rates of the primary components in the case of the secondarybeing a normal as well as a compact companion. These values are comparedwith the known mass loss rates for stars of the same type. From thiscomparison, the presence of a compact secondary could be excluded inBD+57 deg 2611.
