CHARM2: An updated Catalog of High Angular Resolution Measurements
We present an update of the Catalog of High Angular ResolutionMeasurements (CHARM, Richichi & Percheron \cite{CHARM}, A&A,386, 492), which includes results available until July 2004. CHARM2 is acompilation of direct measurements by high angular resolution methods,as well as indirect estimates of stellar diameters. Its main goal is toprovide a reference list of sources which can be used for calibrationand verification observations with long-baseline optical and near-IRinterferometers. Single and binary stars are included, as are complexobjects from circumstellar shells to extragalactic sources. The presentupdate provides an increase of almost a factor of two over the previousedition. Additionally, it includes several corrections and improvements,as well as a cross-check with the valuable public release observationsof the ESO Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). A total of 8231entries for 3238 unique sources are now present in CHARM2. STELIB: A library of stellar spectra at R ~ 2000
We present STELIB, a new spectroscopic stellar library, available athttp://webast.ast.obs-mip.fr/stelib. STELIB consists of an homogeneouslibrary of 249 stellar spectra in the visible range (3200 to 9500Å), with an intermediate spectral resolution (la 3 Å) andsampling (1 Å). This library includes stars of various spectraltypes and luminosity classes, spanning a relatively wide range inmetallicity. The spectral resolution, wavelength and spectral typecoverage of this library represents a substantial improvement overprevious libraries used in population synthesis models. A catalog of rotational and radial velocities for evolved stars. II. Ib supergiant stars
Rotational velocity vsin i and mean radial velocity are presented for asample of 231 Ib supergiant stars covering the spectral region F, G andK. This work is the second part of the large survey carried out with theCORAVEL spectrometer to establish the behavior of the rotation for starsevolving off the main sequence (De Medeiros & Mayor 1999). Thesedata will add constraints to the study of the rotational behavior inevolved stars, as well as solid information concerning tidalinteractions in binary systems and on the link between rotation,chemical abundance and activity in stars of intermediate masses. CHARM: A Catalog of High Angular Resolution Measurements
The Catalog of High Angular Resolution Measurements (CHARM) includesmost of the measurements obtained by the techniques of lunaroccultations and long-baseline interferometry at visual and infraredwavelengths, which have appeared in the literature or have otherwisebeen made public until mid-2001. A total of 2432 measurements of 1625sources are included, along with extensive auxiliary information. Inparticular, visual and infrared photometry is included for almost allthe sources. This has been partly extracted from currently availablecatalogs, and partly obtained specifically for CHARM. The main aim is toprovide a compilation of sources which could be used as calibrators orfor science verification purposes by the new generation of largeground-based facilities such as the ESO Very Large Interferometer andthe Keck Interferometer. Red supergiants in the LMC - III: luminous F and G stars
New BVRI observations for 40 and spectrophotometric measurements for 23F to G LMC supergiant candidates (and 3 galactic F to G supergiants) arepresented. The errors of the BVRI data are 0.01 to 0.03 mag in mostcases. The wavelength range of the spectra is 3400 to 6400 Angstroms,their resolution 10 Angstroms. The mean error of the fluxes is 0.03 mag.Spectral indices measuring the strengths of the Hβ , Hγ ,Hdelta , NaD and CaII H+K lines, the CHα_ {0} and CNbeta_ {0}bands, of the Balmer jump and the slope of the continuum redwards arediscussed as measures of effective temperature and luminosity on thebasis of galactic stars with accurate MK types and parallaxes. TheHγ line and the continuum gradient are very good temperaturecriteria, the CHα_ {0} band and especially the Balmer jump forluminosity. The luminosity classification given for F to G supergiantcandidates in the LMC in the literature is often doubtful. 5 of the 23stars observed spectrophotometrically turn out to be probably galacticforeground dwarfs on the basis both of the Balmer jump and thecomparison of their flux distributions with synthetic ones based on theKurucz model atmospheres. Surface gravities derived purely on the basisof flux distributions and such ones given by models of stellar evolutionagree with each other for dwarfs and giants only. For supergiants theformer are about 1.0 dex higher than the latter. As a consequenceeffective temperatures and metallicities given by these two methodsdeviate from each other for such stars, too. The intrinsic colours andtemperatures of galactic and LMC supergiants do not differ. Withabsolute magnitudes up to -9.6 mag the upper luminosity limit in the LMCdoes not exceed that in the Galaxy, where Ia-0 supergiants haveMV of up to -9.5 mag. The metallicities of the supergiantsshow a rather large scatter. Nevertheless the mean metallicities of 0.02+/- 0.09 dex for the Galaxy and -0.26 +/- 0.10 dex for the LMC agreewell with other observations.

Photoelectric Observations of Lunar Occultations at Engelhardt Astronomical Observatory
Results of the lunar occultations observed from 1984 to 1997 at theEngelhardt Astronomical Observatory are reported. The times of lunaroccultation for 63 stars, with a precision of a few milliseconds, anddiameters for 12 stars have been determined.

A catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations: 1996 edition
A fifth Edition of the Catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations is presentedherewith. It contains 5946 determinations for 3247 stars, including 751stars in 84 associations, clusters or galaxies. The literature iscomplete up to December 1995. The 700 bibliographical referencescorrespond to [Fe/H] determinations obtained from high resolutionspectroscopic observations and detailed analyses, most of them carriedout with the help of model-atmospheres. The Catalogue is made up ofthree formatted files: File 1: field stars, File 2: stars in galacticassociations and clusters, and stars in SMC, LMC, M33, File 3: numberedlist of bibliographical references The three files are only available inelectronic form at the Centre de Donnees Stellaires in Strasbourg, viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5), or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html

Colour excesses of F-G supergiants and Cepheids from Geneva photometry.
A reddening scale for F-G supergiants and Cepheids is presented.Supergiants with low reddenings or in clusters form the basis of thecalibration. In this sense, it is entirely empirical. The data have beenobtained in the Geneva photometric system. Comparisons with otherreddening scales show no disagreement. The only problem is with Fernie'sscale for Cepheids (1990), where a systematic trend exists. Its originis not clear. It is suggested to extend the number of supergiants withindependently obtained colour excesses in order to test the existence ofa possible luminosity dependence of the calibration. A period-colourrelation for Cepheids is deduced, on the basis of the present reddeningcorrections. It gives strong support for V473 Lyr being a secondovertone pulsator.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

A catalogue of Fe/H determinations - 1991 edition
A revised version of the catalog of Fe/H determinations published by G.Cayrel et al. (1985) is presented. The catalog contains 3252 Fe/Hdeterminations for 1676 stars. The literature is complete up to December1990. The catalog includes only Fe/H determinations obtained from highresolution spectroscopic observations based on detailed spectroscopicanalyses, most of them carried out with model atmospheres. The catalogcontains a good number of Fe/H determinations for stars from open andglobular clusters and for some supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds.

A photometric study of the G0-4 Ia(+) hypergiant HD 96918 (V382 Carinae)
Using a photometric method we derive T(eff), log g, and E(B-V) for thestar HD 96918 and also for 35 supergiants of similar spectral class. ForHD 96918 we found T(eff) = 5200 +/- 200 K and log g (cm/sq s) = 0.0 +/-0.5. The comparison of the results indicates that HD 96918 is really ahypergiant with a spectral class around G0-G4. We also estimate thedistance of HD 96918 using the kinematic and reddening methods, and bycomparing its T(eff) and log g with evolutionary calculation. Weconsistently find a distance of 2.7 +/- 1.0 kpc which implies logL/solar luminosity = 5.5 +/- 0.4. A most probable mass for the star is20 +/- 10 solar mass.

Kinematics of Sandage-Fouts stars in three cardinal directions
V and (B - V) for 429, 442, and 427 stars are observed in the directionsof the anticenter, Cygnus, and the NGP, respectively, and DDO colors forthose stars G0 and later. The samples observed are ones for whichSandage and Fouts (1987) have published radial velocities. W, V, and Wcomponents of space velocity are derived from DDO distances withavailable proper motions. A clear correlation was found to exist betweenthe velocity dispersions and Fe/H with the dispersions decreasing asFe/H increases to about + 0.00, where V then becomes significantlynegative. The 'thick disk' component is clearly recognized, with sigma(W) approximately equal to 36 km/sec. In the 'old thin disk' and the'young thin disk', 43 percent and 42 percent of the stars have negativeV values, respectively.

Supergiants and the Galactic metallicity gradient. II - Spectroscopic abundances for 64 distant F- to M-type supergiants
The metallicity gradient in the Galactic disk from in situ stars withvisual magnitude ranging from 6 to 10 is analyzed. Atmosphericparameters and detailed chemical abundances for 64 Population Isupergiants of spectral types F through M and luminosity classes Iathrough II have been determined. The derived Fe/H ratios ranging from-0.5 to + 0.7 show a mean value of +0.13 with an estimated uncertaintyof + or - 0.2. A subset of 25 supergiants fainter than 7th magnitudelying in the direction of the Galactic center shows a Fe/H mean of +0.18+ or - 0.04, while a similar sample of 15 faint supergiants lying in thedirection of the Galactic anticenter shows a lower Fe/H mean of +0.07 +or - 0.06. For a sample of bright supergiants analyzed by Luck andLambert (1985), the mean abundance pattern for all 64 stars showed thefollowing: deficient C and O along with enhancement of N, indicatingmixing of CNO-cycled material to the stellar surfaces; an apparent Srenhancement attributed to departures from LTE; and an essentially solarpattern of other chemical elements.

Observational evidence for mass loss from classical Cepheids
This paper examines the evidence for mass loss from classical Cepheidvariables in the light of recent observational studies of infrared andultraviolet emission from these objects. Mass-loss rates derived forseveral stars range between 10 to the -10th solar masses/yr and 10 tothe -6th solar masses/yr. The lower end of this range probablycorresponds to the majority of classical Cepheids. Nonvariablesupergiants show, on average, a somewhat lower rate of infrared excess,but have mass-loss rates of the same order of magnitude as the Cepheids.On the basis of the observations to date, mass loss alone isinsufficient in explaining the Cepheid mass discrepancy, indicating thatadjustments to the evolutionary or pulsation models present a betterprospect of resolving this discrepancy.

U, V, W velocity components for the old disk using radial velocities of 1295 stars in the three cardinal Galactic directions
New radial velocities are presented for 1295 stars chosen at random nearthe three cardinal Galactic directions of l = 180 deg, b = 0; l = 90deg, b = 0 deg; and b = 90 deg, giving the distribution in U, V, and W,respectively, from the radial velocities alone. The measurements weremade with the coude spectrograph of the Mount Wilson 100 in. Hookerreflector. The purpose of the program is to set limits on the densitynormalization in the solar neighborhood of the old thin disk, the oldthick disk, and the halo. Many more high-velocity stars are present inthe unbiased sample than expected from previous estimates of thenormalization. The data suggest the density ratios in the solarneighborhood to be about 90 percent, 10 percent, and about 0.5 percentfor the thin disk, thick disk, and halo populations, respectively.

A catalogue of Fe/H determinations, 1984 edition
The present version of the Cayrel de Strobel et al. (1981) catalog ofFe/H abundance ratio determinations contains 1921 values for 1035 stars,which represents an augmentation over the previous publication of 48 and47 percent, respectively. In addition, the literature search conductedis complete up to December, 1983. Stellar metal abundance, effectivetemperature, spectroscopic gravity, spectral type, and photometricindices are covered.

Ultraviolet and optical studies of binaries with luminous cool primaries and hot companions. III - RETICON radial velocities
Radial velocities for 72 stars, most of them known or suspected binarieswith F - K giant-supergiant primaries, are derived from Reticon spectrain the region 6005-6235 A at a scale of 7 km/s per diode.Cross-correlation of the spectra normally produces results accurate tobetter than 1.0 km/s. Eight new radial velocity variables are found (HR2786, R Pup, HR 3291, HR 4451, HD 114520, HR 5667, HR 7014, and Nu1Sgr). Improved orbits are determined for 15 known spectroscopicbinaries, and provisional orbits are obtained for seven newspectroscopic binaries.

Nineteen new spectroscopic binaries and the rate of binary stars among F-M supergiants
Nineteen spectroscopic binaries (SBs) have been discovered in radialvelocity measurements made with the CORAVEL spectrophotometer on 181northern F-M supergiants. The rate of detected SBs among northern F-Msupergiants is 21 percent, without any dependence on spectral orluminosity class. The study of the binary F-M supergiants with knownorbital elements indicates that all the systems with a period smallerthan the critical value P(circ) have a nearly circular orbit. The valueof P(circ) depends on the luminosity class, being 400-600 d for class Iband 2000-7000 d for class Ia. This circularization of the orbits may bedue to the transfer of angular momentum during the phase of binary massexchange.

The chemical composition of late-type supergiants. IV - Homogeneous abundances and galactic metallicity trends
A reanalysis of equivalent-width data for 19 northern supergiantsconsidered in previous chemical composition studies is conducted withimproved techniques and atomic data in order to place all supergiantabundances on the same scale. Although surface gravities and surfacetemperatures show only minor changes with respect to previously obtainedvalues, microturbulent velocities are increased by an average of 50%,leading to a desaturation of the lines and a consequent decrease inderived abundances. The solar-neighborhood supergiants are thus broughtto within 0.1 dex of the sun and local F-type dwarfs, in view of adecrease in Fe/H abundance ratio values of 0.2 dex. It is also shownthat while most equivalent widths are on the same scale those of thesouthern stars are systematically high with respect to the remainingvalues, requiring the exclusion of nine stars from consideration inlocal and galactic metallicity discussions.

The chemical compositions of 26 distant late-type supergiants and the metallicity gradient in the galactic disk

Evidence for an abundance gradient in the galactic disk
DDO photometry of field K giants in distant parts of the galactic diskin the galactic center and anticenter directions is used together withDDO and UBV photometry of 41 open clusters to investigate the variationof metallicity across the galactic disk. Some problems in thecalibration of DDO photometry are examined, and the observations areanalyzed. The data are shown to be consistent with the suggestion thatthere is a composition gradient among stars of all ages in the galacticdisk. Specifically, it is found that: (1) the metallicity gradient inthe solar vicinity is approximately -0.05/kpc; (2) the gradient maybecome steeper beyond a galactocentric distance of approximately 11 kpc;(3) the nitrogen gradient is more pronounced than the overall gradient;and (4) the gradient in the youngest stellar population is probably notdramatically different from the overall gradient
