Recent Minima of 146 Eclipsing Binary Stars
This paper continues the publication of times of minima for eclipsingbinary stars from observations reported to the AAVSO Eclipsing BinarySection. Times of minima from observations made from October 2010 thruMarch 2011, along with a few unpublished times of minima from olderdata, are presented.

Random forest automated supervised classification of Hipparcos periodic variable stars
We present an evaluation of the performance of an automatedclassification of the Hipparcos periodic variable stars into 26 types.The sub-sample with the most reliable variability types available in theliterature is used to train supervised algorithms to characterize thetype dependencies on a number of attributes. The most useful attributesevaluated with the random forest methodology include, in decreasingorder of importance, the period, the amplitude, the V-I colour index,the absolute magnitude, the residual around the folded light-curvemodel, the magnitude distribution skewness and the amplitude of thesecond harmonic of the Fourier series model relative to that of thefundamental frequency. Random forests and a multi-stage scheme involvingBayesian network and Gaussian mixture methods lead to statisticallyequivalent results. In standard 10-fold cross-validation (CV)experiments, the rate of correct classification is between 90 and 100per cent, depending on the variability type. The main mis-classificationcases, up to a rate of about 10 per cent, arise due to confusion betweenSPB and ACV blue variables and between eclipsing binaries, ellipsoidalvariables and other variability types. Our training set and thepredicted types for the other Hipparcos periodic stars are availableonline.

Bayesian inference of stellar parameters and interstellar extinction using parallaxes and multiband photometry
Astrometric surveys provide the opportunity to measure the absolutemagnitudes of large numbers of stars, but only if the individualline-of-sight extinctions are known. Unfortunately, extinction is highlydegenerate with stellar effective temperature when estimated frombroad-band optical/infrared photometry. To address this problem, Iintroduce a Bayesian method for estimating the intrinsic parameters of astar and its line-of-sight extinction. It uses both photometry andparallaxes in a self-consistent manner in order to provide anon-parametric posterior probability distribution over the parameters.The method makes explicit use of domain knowledge by employing theHertzsprung-Russell Diagram (HRD) to constrain solutions and to ensurethat they respect stellar physics. I first demonstrate this method byusing it to estimate effective temperature and extinction from BVJHKdata for a set of artificially reddened Hipparcos stars, for whichaccurate effective temperatures have been estimated from high-resolutionspectroscopy. Using just the four colours, we see the expected strongdegeneracy (positive correlation) between the temperature andextinction. Introducing the parallax, apparent magnitude and the HRDreduces this degeneracy and improves both the precision (reduces theerror bars) and the accuracy of the parameter estimates, the latter byabout 35 per cent. The resulting accuracy is about 200 K in temperatureand 0.2 mag in extinction. I then apply the method to estimate theseparameters and absolute magnitudes for some 47 000 F, G, K Hipparcosstars which have been cross-matched with Two-Micron All-Sky Survey(2MASS). The method can easily be extended to incorporate the estimationof other parameters, in particular metallicity and surface gravity,making it particularly suitable for the analysis of the 109stars from Gaia.

BAV-Results of Observations - Photoelectric Minima of Selected Eclipsing Binaries and Maxima of Pulsating Stars

The Spectroscopic Orbit of SAO 167450, Visual Companion of AA Ceti
We have determined a spectroscopic orbit for SAO 167450, which is thevisual secondary of the W UMa-type eclipsing binary AA Cet, and so thesystem is quadruple. Radial velocities from the coudé feed and 4m telescopes at Kitt Peak National Observatory produce an orbit with aperiod of 25.68 days and an eccentricity of 0.50. We classify both theprimary and secondary as G0 subgiant/dwarf stars and find that they aresomewhat metal rich relative to the Sun. The high lithium abundances ofboth components argue that the stars are less than 1 Gyr old. If thecomponents are dwarfs, they are pseudosynchronously rotating, while ifthey are subgiants, they are rotating more slowly thanpseudosynchronous. We very roughly estimate a period of 5,000-15,000 yrfor the visual pair. Although it has been suggested that in a multiplesystem, the combination of Kozai cycles and tidal friction may producecontact binaries, the separation between the visual components in thissystem appears to be much too large to accomplish that result.

XID II: Statistical Cross-Association of ROSAT Bright Source Catalog X-ray Sources with 2MASS Point Source Catalog Near-Infrared Sources
The 18,806 ROSAT All Sky Survey Bright Source Catalog (RASS/BSC) X-raysources are quantitatively cross-associated with near-infrared (NIR)sources from the Two Micron All Sky Survey Point Source Catalog(2MASS/PSC). An association catalog is presented, listing the mostlikely counterpart for each RASS/BSC source, the probability Pid that the NIR source and X-ray source are uniquelyassociated, and the probability P no-id that none of the2MASS/PSC sources are associated with the X-ray source. The catalogincludes 3853 high quality (P id>0.98) X-ray-NIR matches,2280 medium quality (0.98 >= P id>0.9) matches, and4153 low quality (0.9 >= P id>0.5) matches. Of the highquality matches, 1418 are associations that are not listed in the SIMBADdatabase, and for which no high quality match with a USNO-A2 opticalsource was presented for the RASS/BSC source in previous work. Thepresent work offers a significant number of new associations withRASS/BSC objects that will require optical/NIR spectroscopy forclassification. For example, of the 6133 P id>0.92MASS/PSC counterparts presented in the association catalog, 2411 haveno classification listed in the SIMBAD database. These 2MASS/PSC sourceswill likely include scientifically useful examples of known sourceclasses of X-ray emitters (white dwarfs, coronally active stars, activegalactic nuclei), but may also contain previously unknown sourceclasses. It is determined that all coronally active stars in theRASS/BSC should have a counterpart in the 2MASS/PSC, and that the uniqueassociation of these RASS/BSC sources with their NIR counterparts thusis confusion limited.

Speckle Interferometry at Mount Wilson Observatory: Observations Obtained in 2006-2007 and 35 New Orbits
Results are presented for 607 speckle interferometric observations ofdouble stars, as well as 222 measures of single stars or unresolvedpairs. All data were obtained in 2006 and 2007 at the Mount WilsonObservatory, using the 2.5 m Hooker telescope. Separations range from0farcs06 to 6farcs31, with a median of 0farcs34. These three observingruns concentrated on binaries in need of confirmation (mainly Hipparcosand Tycho pairs), as well as systems in need of improved orbitalelements. New orbital solutions have been determined for 35 systems as aresult.

A Catalog of Visual Double and Multiple Stars With Eclipsing Components
A new catalog of visual double systems containing eclipsing binaries asone component is presented. The main purpose of this catalog is tocompile a complete list of all known multiples of this variety, both forcurrent analysis and to highlight those in need of additionalobservations. All available photometric and astrometric data wereanalyzed, resulting in new orbits for eight systems and new times ofminimum light for a number of the eclipsing binaries. Some of thesystems in the catalog have acceptable solutions for their visualorbits, although in most cases their orbital periods are too long forsimultaneous analysis. Also included, however, are a number of systemswhich currently lack an orbital solution but which may be suitable forsimultaneous analysis in the future.

Radial Velocity Studies of Close Binary Stars. XV
Radial velocity (RV) measurements and sine curve fits to the orbital RVvariations are presented for the last eight close binary systemsanalyzed in the same way as in the previous papers of this series: QXAnd, DY Cet, MR Del, HI Dra, DD Mon, V868 Mon, ER Ori, and Y Sex. Foranother seven systems (TT Cet, AA Cet, CW Lyn, V563 Lyr, CW Sge, LV Vir,and MW Vir), phase coverage is insufficient to provide reliable orbitsbut RVs of individual components were measured. Observations of a fewcomplicated systems observed throughout the David Dunlap Observatory(DDO) close binary program are also presented; among them is anespecially interesting multiple system V857 Her which—in additionto the contact binary—very probably contains one or more subdwarfcomponents of much earlier spectral type. All suspected binaries whichwere found to be most probably pulsating stars are briefly discussed interms of mean RVs and projected rotation velocities (vsin i) as well asspectral-type estimates. In two of them, CU CVn and V752 Mon, thebroadening functions show a clear presence of nonradial pulsations. Thepreviously missing spectral types for Paper I are given here in additionto such estimates for most of the program stars of this paper.Based on the data obtained at the David Dunlap Observatory, Universityof Toronto, Toronto, Canada.

Comparative statistics and origin of triple and quadruple stars
The statistics of catalogued quadruple stars consisting of two binaries(hierarchy 2 + 2), is studied in comparison with triple stars, withrespective sample sizes of 81 and 724. Seven representative quadruplesystems are discussed in greater detail. The main conclusions are asfollows. (i) Quadruple systems of ? Lyr type with similar massesand inner periods are common, in 42 per cent of the sample the outermass ratio is above 0.5 and the inner periods differ by less than 10times. (ii) The distributions of the inner periods in triple andquadruple stars are similar and bimodal. The inner mass ratios do notcorrelate with the inner periods. (iii) The statistics of outer periodsand mass ratios in triples and quadruples are different. The medianouter mass ratio in triples is 0.39 independently of the outer period,which has a smooth distribution. In contrast, the outer periods of 25per cent quadruples concentrate in the narrow range from 10 to 100yr,the outer mass ratios of these tight quadruples are above 0.6 and theirtwo inner periods are similar to each other. (iv) The outer and innermass ratios in triple and quadruple stars are not mutually correlated.In 13 per cent of quadruples both inner mass ratios are above 0.85(double twins). (v) The inner and outer orbital angular momenta andperiods in triple and quadruple systems with inner periods above 30dshow some correlation, the ratio of outer-to-inner periods is mostlycomprised between 5 and 104. In the systems with small periodratios the directions of the orbital spins are correlated, while in thesystems with large ratios they are not. The properties of multiple starsdo not correspond to the products of dynamical decay of small clusters,hence the N-body dynamics is not the dominant process of theirformation. On the other hand, rotationally driven (cascade)fragmentation possibly followed by migration of inner and/or outerorbits to shorter periods is a promising scenario to explain the originof triple and quadruple stars.

Cross-Correlation in Four Dimensions: Application to the Quadruple-lined Spectroscopic System HD 110555
We develop a technique to measure radial velocities of stars fromspectra that present four sets of lines. The algorithm is an extensionof the two-dimensional cross-correlation method TODCOR to fourdimensions. It computes the correlation of the observed spectrum againsta combination of four templates with all possible shifts, and it alsoallows for the derivation of the light ratios of the components. Aftertesting the algorithm and demonstrating its ability to measure Dopplershifts accurately even under conditions of heavy line blending, we applyit to the case of the quadruple-lined system HD 110555. The primary andsecondary components of this previously known visual binary(ρ~0.4'') are each shown to be double-lined spectroscopicbinaries with periods of 57 days and 76 days, respectively, making thesystem a hierarchical quadruple. The secondary in the 76 day subsystemcontributes only 2.5% to the total light, illustrating the ability ofthe method to measure velocities of very faint components.

Radial Velocity Studies of Close Binary Stars. XI.
Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to orbital radialvelocity variations are presented for 10 close binary systems: DU Boo,ET Boo, TX Cnc, V1073 Cyg, HL Dra, AK Her, VW LMi, V566 Oph, TV UMi, andAG Vir. With this contribution, the David Dunlap Observatory program hasreached the point of 100 published radial velocity orbits. The radialvelocities have been determined using an improved fitting technique thatuses rotational profiles to approximate individual peaks in broadeningfunctions. Three systems, ET Boo, VW LMi, and TV UMi, are found to bequadruple, while AG Vir appears to be a spectroscopic triple. ET Boo, amember of a close visual binary with Pvis=113 yr, waspreviously known to be a multiple system, but we show that the secondcomponent is actually a close, noneclipsing binary. The new observationshave enabled us to determine the spectroscopic orbits of the companion,noneclipsing pairs in ET Boo and VW LMi. A particularly interesting caseis VW LMi, for which the period of the mutual revolution of the twospectroscopic binaries is only 355 days. While most of the studiedeclipsing pairs are contact binaries, ET Boo is composed of twodouble-lined detached binaries, and HL Dra is a single-lined detached orsemidetached system. Five systems of this group have been observedspectroscopically before: TX Cnc, V1073 Cyg, AK Her (as a single-linedbinary), V566 Oph, and AG Vir, but our new data are of much higherquality than in the previous studies.Based on data obtained at the David Dunlap Observatory, University ofToronto, Canada.

A catalogue of eclipsing variables
A new catalogue of 6330 eclipsing variable stars is presented. Thecatalogue was developed from the General Catalogue of Variable Stars(GCVS) and its textual remarks by including recently publishedinformation about classification of 843 systems and making correspondingcorrections of GCVS data. The catalogue1 represents thelargest list of eclipsing binaries classified from observations.

SB9: The ninth catalogue of spectroscopic binary orbits
The Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits(http://sb9.astro.ulb.ac.be) continues the series of compilations ofspectroscopic orbits carried out over the past 35 years by Batten andcollaborators. As of 2004 May 1st, the new Catalogue holds orbits for2386 systems. Some essential differences between this catalogue and itspredecessors are outlined and three straightforward applications arepresented: (1) completeness assessment: period distribution of SB1s andSB2s; (2) shortest periods across the H-R diagram; (3)period-eccentricity relation.

Up-to-Date Linear Elements of Eclipsing Binaries

Key parameters of W UMa-type contact binaries discovered by HIPPARCOS
A sample of W UMa-type binaries which were discovered by the HIPPARCOSsatellite was constructed with the aid of well defined selectioncriteria described in this work. The selection process showed up thatseveral systems of which the variability types have been assigned as EBin HIPPARCOS catalogue are genuine contact binaries of W UMa-type. Thelight curves of the 64 selected systems based on HIPPARCOS photometrywere analyzed with the aid of light curve synthesis method by Rucinskiand their geometric elements (namely mass ratio q, degree of contact f,and orbital inclination i) were determined. The solutions were obtainedfor the first time for many of the systems in the sample and would be agood source for their future light curve analyses based on more precisefollow-up observations.Based on observations made with the ESA HIPPARCOSastrometry satellite.

CCD Times of Minima of Some Eclipsing Binaries in 2003
We present CCD observations of minima of 31 eclipsing binaries observedby SAVS sky survey in 2003.

The Hamburg/RASS Catalogue of optical identifications. Northern high-galactic latitude ROSAT Bright Source Catalogue X-ray sources
We present the Hamburg/RASS Catalogue (HRC) of optical identificationsof X-ray sources at high-galactic latitude. The HRC includes all X-raysources from the ROSAT Bright Source Catalogue (RASS-BSC) with galacticlatitude |b| >=30degr and declination delta >=0degr . In thispart of the sky covering ~ 10 000 deg2 the RASS-BSC contains5341 X-ray sources. For the optical identification we used blue Schmidtprism and direct plates taken for the northern hemisphere Hamburg QuasarSurvey (HQS) which are now available in digitized form. The limitingmagnitudes are 18.5 and 20, respectively. For 82% of the selectedRASS-BSC an identification could be given. For the rest either nocounterpart was visible in the error circle or a plausibleidentification was not possible. With ~ 42% AGN represent the largestgroup of X-ray emitters, ~ 31% have a stellar counterpart, whereasgalaxies and cluster of galaxies comprise only ~ 4% and ~ 5%,respectively. In ~ 3% of the RASS-BSC sources no object was visible onour blue direct plates within 40\arcsec around the X-ray sourceposition. The catalogue is used as a source for the selection of(nearly) complete samples of the various classes of X-ray emitters.

Kinematics of Hipparcos Visual Binaries. II. Stars with Ground-Based Orbital Solutions
This paper continues kinematical investigations of the Hipparcos visualbinaries with known orbits. A sample, consisting of 804 binary systemswith orbital elements determined from ground-based observations, isselected. The mean relative error of their parallaxes is about 12% andthe mean relative error of proper motions is about 4%. However, even 41%of the sample stars lack radial velocity measurements. The computedGalactic velocity components and other kinematical parameters are usedto divide the stars with known radial velocities into kinematical agegroups. The majority (92%) of binaries from the sample are thin diskstars, 7.6% have thick disk kinematics and only two binaries have halokinematics. Among them, the long-period variable Mira Ceti has a verydiscordant {Hipparcos} and ground-based parallax values. From the wholesample, 60 stars are ascribed to the thick disk and halo population.There is an urgent need to increase the number of the identified halobinaries with known orbits and substantially improve the situation withradial velocity data for stars with known orbits.
