Couteau at the Nice Observatory (France), namely WDS01450+2703 (COU 750), 03321+4340 (1688), 03423+3141 (691), 06503+2409(768), 12409+2708 (596),14138+3059 (606), 15390+2545 (612), 16584+3943(1289), 17075+3810 (1291), 17221+2310 (415), 18035+ 4032 (1785),18043+4206 (1786), 19089+3404 (1462), 19180+2012 (321), 20151+3742(2416), 20216+1930 (327 AB), 21593+4606 (2138), 22077+2622 (537),22307+1758 (234) and 23199+2844 (439). For two of these stars, COU 750and COU 1289, these are the first orbits to be published other than IAUCirculars; for the others, previously published orbits are improved onby those presented here. Star masses were in fifteen cases calculatedfrom Hipparcos parallax data, and in the other five from dynamicalparallaxes; in all cases, the error is estimated. Some of the otherphysical and orbital properties of these stars are also discussed. All the figures and tables are only available in electronic form athttp://www.edpsciences.org

ICCD Speckle Observations of Binary Stars. XXIII. Measurements during 1982-1997 from Six Telescopes, with 14 New Orbits
We present 2017 observations of 1286 binary stars, observed by means ofspeckle interferometry using six telescopes over a 15 year period from1982 April to 1997 June. These measurements constitute the 23dinstallment in CHARA's speckle program at 2 to 4 m class telescopes andinclude the second major collection of measurements from the MountWilson 100 inch (2.5 m) Hooker Telescope. Orbital elements are alsopresented for 14 systems, seven of which have had no previouslypublished orbital analyses.

Radial velocities. Measurements of 2800 B2-F5 stars for HIPPARCOS
Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of 2930 B2-F5 stars,95% observed by the Hipparcos satellite in the north hemisphere and 80%without reliable radial velocity up to now. Observations were obtainedat the Observatoire de Haute Provence with a dispersion of 80Ä,mm(-1) with the aim of studying stellar and galactic dynamics.Radial velocities have been measured by correlation with templates ofthe same spectral class. The mean obtained precision is 3.0 km s(-1)with three observations. A new MK spectral classification is estimatedfor all stars. Based on observations made at the Haute ProvenceObservatory, France and on data from The Hipparcos Catalogue, ESA.Tables 4, 5 and 6 are only available in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.htm

Mass determination of astrometric binaries with Hipparcos. II. Selection of candidates and results
In a previous paper (\cite{Mar97}) we have shown that for double starswith orbital periods smaller than about 25 years, it was possible todetermine from the Hipparcos data, the mass ratio B of the components orthe difference between the mass and intensity ratios, beta -B, providedthe orbital elements of the relative orbit are available. From anextensive literature search we have selected 145 potential systems, ofwhich 46 yielded eventually a satisfactory solution. For eight systemswith the largest separations, the peculiarities of the natural directionassociated to the Hipparcos observations, the 'hippacentre', have beenfully exploited to derive the mass ratio of the components without anyadditional assumption. For the remaining 38, the derivation of the massratio was possible only by taking the magnitude difference between thetwo components from other sources. The parallax determinedsimultaneously, is then used to produce the individual masses of thecomponents. The astrophysical relevance of the results is discussed andwhen possible (17 systems) the masses are compared to ground-basedvalues.

CCD Stromgren Photometry of Young Reddened Clusters
The capabilities of CCD uvby photometry for the study of reddened youngclusters are investigated. Observations of four fields in the directionof the clusters Basel 1, Berkeley 86, NGC 6704, and NGC 6756, with atotal of 1665 stars measured in at least the y and b bands, produce newestimates for the clusters parameters. The results are compared to thosefrom previously published studies in different photometric systemsshowing good agreement in the values of color excess and distancemodulus, with the exception of NGC 6756, for which an essentially largerdistance is found. Furthermore, the ages estimated for this cluster,Basel 1, and NGC 6704 are found to be higher than previously assumed, inparticular for the last one. The presence of red giants as clustermembers is suggested in Basel 1, NGC 6704, and NGC 6756.

ICCD speckle observations of binary stars. II - Measurements during 1982-1985 from the Kitt Peak 4 M telescope
This paper represents the continuation of a systematic program of binarystar speckle interferometry initiated at the 4 m telescope on Kitt Peakin late 1975. Between 1975 and 1981, the observations were obtained witha photographic speckle camera, the data from which were reduced byoptical analog methods. In mid-1982, a new speckle camera employing anintensified charge-coupled device as the detector continued the programand necessitated the development of new digital procedures for reducingand analyzing speckle data. The camera and the data-processingtechniques are described herein. This paper presents 2780 newmeasurements of 1012 binary and multiple star systems, including thefirst direct resolution of 64 systems, for the interval 1982 through1985.

Measurements of double stars at Nice with 74-cm and 50-cm refractors

Digital speckle interferometry of binary stars
Observations of 46 suspected spectroscopic or visual binary starsobtained using a television speckle interferometer with digital dataaccumulation on the 6-m telescope of the Special AstrophysicalObservatory at Nizhni Arkhyz during April and June, 1983, are reported. The television system employs a 256 x 256 raster and 50-Hz frame rateand the two-dimensional autocorrelation-function (ACF) algorithm ofBlazit et al. (1975); filters used have central wavelengths andbandwidths 600 and 16 nm (orange), 656 and 12 nm (red), 525 and 10 nm(green), and 435 and 12 nm (blue). A typical three-dimensional ACF mapof binaries are given in a table; and the 21 unresolved objects arelisted separately. The separations of the resolved pairs range from 29to 270 marcsecs.

Comparison of interferometer and micrometer observations of close visual binaries
Measurements of the orbits of close binary stars derived from speckleinterferometric observations are compared to calculations made on thebasis of visual micrometric observations. It is found that the visualmicrometric measurements overestimate the small angular distance (rho)between the stars, and that similar errors are contained in thepredicted ephemerides. Corrections for both present day and earlierobservers are provided. The visual interferometric angular distancescales are related by rho i = 1.67 x (rho v 0.08 sec), if rho v is lessthan 0.20 sec. The interferometric measurements agree with those of aprevious observation, and have a root-means-square error of 0.09 sec.

Interferometer observations of double stars. II
Position angles and separations of 83 visual binaries have been measuredwith a photoelectric phase-grating interferometer on a 1-m reflector.Twenty pairs deviate significantly from the ephemerides; nine starsremain unresolved. The magnitude limit of the interferometer iscalculated from the measured seeing and found to agree with the actuallimit of about nine magnitudes.
