Spectral Classification of Stars in A Supplement to the Bright Star Catalogue
MK spectral types are given for about 584 stars in A Supplement to theBright Star Catalogue. These are compared with Hipparcos parallaxes tocheck the reliability of those classifications. The estimated errors are+/-1.2 subtypes, and 10% of the luminosity classes may be wrong.

Interstellar polarization at high galactic latitudes from distant stars. VI. Extended polarization map and connection with the local spiral structure.
We present new interstellar polarization measurements for 116 stars athigh galactic latitudes. Our data show that Markkanen's cloud -- themain polarization structure seen in the North Galactic Pole area (b >75 degr) extends further towards lower latitudes. Especially, we havefound a new dust formation in the area 35 degr < l < 45 degr, 57degr < b < 63 degr. Interstellar polarization in this part of thesky peaks at 0.7%, which gives a lower limit to the extinctionAV > 0.23m. Polarization vectors in this cloud are verywell aligned along the direction of l = 50 degr. On the IRAS 100 micronmap this dust structure shows up as a bright emission area. We discussthe new polarization map extending from circumpolar to lower latitudesand point out features which suggest that Markkanen's cloud may be apart of the dust lane in the inner edge of the local spiral or spur.

GPM1 - a catalog of absolute proper motions of stars with respect to galaxies
The description of the first version of the General Compiled Catalogueof Absolute Proper Motions (GPM1) for a sample of HIPPARCOS stars, derived with respect to galaxies within the plan called Catalogue ofFaint Stars (KSZ, Deutch 1952), is presented. The principal aim of theGPM1 construction was to provide absolute proper motions of stars todetermine the rotation of the HIPPARCOS system. The GPM1 cataloguecontains 977 HIPPARCOS Input Catalogue stars with V magnitudes $5^m -11^m in 180 fields north of -25 degrees of declination. The accuracy ofthe proper motions is 8 mas/yr (milliarcseconds per year). Comparison ofproper motions of GPM1 with those of the PPM and ACRS was performed andanalyzed with respect to systematic errors caused by spurious rotationof the FK5 system. The standard errors show that the rotation may bedetermined with an accuracy better than 1 mas/yr. Catalog is onlyavailable in electronic form at the CDS via anonymous ftpcdsarc.u-strasbg.fr or ftp 130.79.128.5.

First radial velocities for 146 bright F- and G-type stars
We have obtained an average of 5.7 radial velocities for 146 northernstars of types F and G (all luminosity classes) listed in 'A Supplementto the Bright Star Catalogue' as having no previously known radialvelocity measures. Those were obtained with charge coupled devices(CCDs) and a cross-correlation technique; the intrinsic velocityaccuracy, based on stars of apparently constant velocity, is probablyless than +/- 0.3 km/s per mean. Of those stars 14% are newly discoveredSB2 stars. The prevelance of rapid profile variations (in minutes orhours) in most of the broad-lined F-type stars makes it difficult toobtain accurate measures for them.
